Russ Hamel, a millionaire author, marries for a second time. His wife, Nancy, is twenty-two years younger than he is. He receives poison pen letters, hinting that Nancy is having an affair. He employs a detective agency to watch his wife. Bart Anderson, the operator assigned to watch Nancy, is living beyond his means. He discovers Nancy is not leading a blameless life. Pressed by increasing debts and a bleak future, he turns blackmailer.
