Summary
(From the publisher):
Absent without Leave is the extended confession of a middle-aged Wilhelm as he wanders about his hometown of Cologne years after the war. Reminescences of his wife and friends killed in the war mingle with cynical observations on the state of his city, past and present. For all his apparent sophistication, Wilhelm, like the other walking wounded that populate Böll's fiction, is ultimately innocent.
