Summary : user synopsis

Penthesilea, the heroine of the novel, is a young woman who lives in the city of Themiscyra. Themiscyra is the home of the Amazons, who protect it and its occupants – runaways, abused women, and unwanted female babies – from men.

Penthesilea intends to become a mounted archer like her mother, but gets caught up in the political roilings between different factions among the Amazons, facing trials and obstacles she had never imagined. Will she triumph? Will she even survive? Adventure alongside a strong, courageous young woman as she rises through the ranks of the Amazons.

This novel is a lesbian feminist re-imagining of ancient myth. Though it is set a couple of generations before the Trojan War, issues relevant to contemporary lesbians are deftly woven into the story. Lesbian and feminist (and, of course, lesbian-feminist!) readers will find certain themes and arguments quite familiar.

  • "A classic heroic saga of the women-loving Amazons who lived, loved and battled during the time of the Trojan Wars – like all other heroic sagas, this one is filled with glory and defeat, brave deeds and betrayal, intrigue, jealousy, sex and love – with womanly, Lesbian difference. Don’t miss it." Marilyn Murphy, author of Are You Girls Traveling Alone? Adventures in Lesbianic Logic
  • "The detailing is exquisitely convincing. Penthesilea, the heroine, is the intrepid dyke-next-door given free rein to prove her prowess. Fiction though it is, The Amazon Chronicles gave me a sense of our herstory. Inclusion of current lesbian issues like boy-child conflict and in-fighting enhanced rather than detracted from that sense." Lee Lynch, reviewer and author of numerous books
