iblist.com user synopsis
Penthesilea, the heroine of the novel, is a young woman who lives in the city of Themiscyra. Themiscyra is the home of the Amazons, who protect it and its occupants runaways, abused women, and unwanted female babies from men.
Penthesilea intends to become a mounted archer like her mother, but gets caught up in the political roilings between different factions among the Amazons, facing trials and obstacles she had never imagined. Will she triumph? Will she even survive? Adventure alongside a strong, courageous young woman as she rises through the ranks of the Amazons.
This novel is a lesbian feminist re-imagining of ancient myth. Though it is set a couple of generations before the Trojan War, issues relevant to contemporary lesbians are deftly woven into the story. Lesbian and feminist (and, of course, lesbian-feminist!) readers will find certain themes and arguments quite familiar.
