When the cottage of Mr. Hick burns down one night, five children from the same neighbourhood think that someone deliberately started the fire, and so does the policeman Mr. Goon.

Goon is not to happy when he finds out that the five children and their little dog are investigating the situation by themself, calling themselves detectives.

The children become friends with Mr. Jenkins the inspector, and they tell him about their theories. There are many suspects. Who will win the race to find out who is the real perpetrator? The children and their dog, or Mr. Goon?
