The story concerns the first manned spaceship, which has disappeared from radar and lost contact with Earth, only to reappear and come crashing down into a London residential area. When the scientific team in charge, led by Professor Bernard Quatermass, eventually enters the ship, they find only one of the three space-men, Victor Carroon, present: the other two have simply vanished, their spacesuits still intact.
Scotland Yard Inspector Lomax joins with the Quatermass party to uncover the mystery of the missing men. In the meantime, the so-far mute and seemingly disoriented Carroon is determined to be changing, somehow, physically.
It is eventually determined that, while out of contact with Earth, the spaceship encountered some entirely unknown and unexpected form of alien life, living in open space, which has invaded Carroon's body, in the process absorbing the two other spacemen's bodies and minds with it, and is now further mutating.
Before the investigation can proceed further, however, Carroon is abducted by a band of gangsters and, escaping them, disappears into the London streets. By the time he is relocated by Quatermass and Lomax, the alien force has altered him completely into an unholy composite of animal and plant material, alive, hungry, and now at the point of producing spores by which to spread its kind across the face of the planet...
