“Are you admiring the view?” he asked. “Yes,” LaRaine agreed without turning. She didn’t want Travis McCrea to see the brightness of the unshed tears in her eyes. “It’s a vast, beautiful…” The lie stuck in her throat. She couldn’t find anything beautiful about this desolate country. ”…Nothing,” she finished with cold, blatant truthfulness. “You could be right.” Travis considered her reply. LaRaine felt his gaze on her. Heat rushed through her body as she realized he was applying the description to her instead of the land — a beautiful nothing!
Her every move was deliberate. Travis’s hands rested loosely on her waist. LaRaine slid her fingers into the curling black hair at his neck to force his head down. The touch of his hard lips on hers was warm and undemanding. The initiative had been hers but now Travis was taking over. His mouth continued its exploration of hers, the firm pressure subtly teasing. There was a fluttering weakness in her stomach. For the first time in her life LaRaine wanted to respond naturally to a man’s kiss. Then he was slowly lifting his head and unwinding her arms from around his neck. “Are you bored, LaRaine?” His voice taunted her. “Are you seeking a diversion, an affair with a local cowboy to pass the time?”
