Summary (From the publisher):

Hard hit by the Great Depression, Danny Garvey's father is forced to leave his family behind in New York City while he sets out in search of work. In his absence, Danny does whatever he can to keep the family afloat: whether that means helping his mother with her laundry business or earning a few extra pennies shining shoes. But even this isn't enough, especially as the months go by with no word from Pa.

Despite these hardships, Danny's family perseveres and grows closer to their neighbors—especially to the huge Riley clan that lives across the hall. Together they share a lot of laughter, love, and hope.
