Flanders, 19th century. An old farmer (Vermeulen) and his son (Louis) have the most succesful farm in the area, but when the son wants to have more control and even take over from his father, things go wrong.
Refusing to admit his old age and admit that his son is more than capable, Vermeulen acts in a way that will destroy his farm. And when his son starts to see a girl he considers too far beneath them, things get out of control.
Symbol of the fight between father and son is the flax.
