Summary

John Jasper is the respectable choirmaster in the sleepy cathedral city of Cloisterham. But he hides from the world his addiction to opium and his passionate and jealous love for Rosa Bud, with whom his nephew Edwin Drood is locked in a longstanding, but loveless engagement. When Edwin disappears suddenly one tempestuous Christmas Eve, Jasper reveals his treacherous love to Rosa, and dedicates himself to hunting down Edwin's killer. But is the vengeful Jasper himself the killer he seeks? Is Edwin really dead?
