Summary (IBList user synopsis):

Laurence Sterne published this satiric work in nine volumes between 1759 and 1766. Although written it the 18th century it remains one of the most most influential books about the book itself. Sterne applies meta-fictional strategies which should re-flourish in the postmodern movements of the 20th century.

The work claims repeatedly to be about the life (and the opinions) of its author, Tristram Shandy, whose birth does not take place until late in the book. The story is more concerned with events that took place before the author's birth which he observes and comments on in a satirical manner.

However the importance of this book is not what it is about, but how it is told. A classic reflection on the art of story-telling.
