(From the publisher):
In the fifth book of Outremer, the renegade state of Surayon will have to open its hidden, impassable borders—allowing the Knights Ransomer to enforce God's vengeance against a heretic people.
Even magic-workers are mortal and may be slain...
The daughter of the King's Shadow has been abducted on her wedding night, and Hasan, war-leader of the desert Sharai, is leading his army in pursuit. Either he will have his bride Julianne back alive, or the land will run with the blood of infidels.
An amry of the poor is also marching through the desert to an uncertain end, following a preacher with a blessed relic and a gift for miracles. He presents himself as a holy man, but those healed by these "miracles" invariably choose to follow the preacher, zombie-like, and his intent is far from peaceful.
The armies will converge on Surayon—that vanished, heretic state whose safety seems less permanent all the time, though its borders can only be breached by treachery and blood...
