Summary (From the publisher):

All day long Emma Widnes sat at her window above the hardware shop watching life go by outside. Her husband, Norman, watched too, but he looked at different things and he had secrets to hide. They were not the only observers of what went on in Bidbury, where the old and new towns dwelt, sometimes uneasily, side by side and where terror and violence came to play their parts in the life of the community.

The scene in the bedroom where the body lay sprawled shocked even the experienced CID men investigating the brutal attack. As they began to fit clues together they found links connecting Norman Widnes, whose existence in the shop seemed so humdrum, with the lives of others -- and with sudden death, present and past.
