An unusual romance, set in the Old West during the American Civil War. Rebecca Carver, a young and pregnant pioneer woman, is on her way to Oregon when her husband is killed by two renegade white buffalo hunters. With winter coming, she is stranded in a desolate trading post with Soars Like a Hawk (aka: Hawk), a Cheyenne warrior chief, badly wounded by the same buffalo hunters. She does not trust the Indian, and he, of course, does not trust her, but realizing that she will need Hawk's help if she is to survive the next few months, Rebecca nurses him back to health. The mismatched couple become close: first friends...then something much deeper. As they come to realize how they truly feel about each other, they must not only do battle with the Pawnee, deadly enemies of both the Cheyenne and white settlers, but also Hawk's own people.
