Summary
:
An old woman has been brutally murdered. The only suspect, her lodger, is arrested, found guilty, and condemned to death. The day of the verdict, Hercule Poirot receives an unexpected visit from Superintendent Spence, a retired policeman who has come to ask for Poirot's help with the case. 'I don't think he did it,' Spence says of the convicted man.
