Summary (From the publisher):

Hester Prynne gives birth to a child while her husband is away and refuses to name the father, thereby scandalising her community. In the harsh moral climate of Puritan New England, she is forced to wear a scarlet 'A' for 'adulteress' embroidered on her breast. It is Hester's great love for her daughter and an inner sense of personal morality which sustain her through painful years of public disgrace, and make her one of literature's strongest heroines.

The Reader's Supplement to this ENRICHED CLASSICS edition appears in the center insert. It has been prepared under the supervision of an editorial committee directed by Harry Shefter, Professor of English, New York University, and author of many books used extensively for the improvement of skills in the language arts. The contributing editors for this edition where [sic] Hortense H. Levisohn, formerly principal, William Howard Taft High School, and Leonard R. N. Ashley, Professor of English, Brooklyn College. Grateful acknowledgment is made to the Picture Collection Division of the New York Public Library, which provided much of the illustrative material.
