The narrator, an ordinary middle-aged woman, wakes up one morning to discover that she is all alone and surrounded by a wall which keeps her isolated in the remote mountain lodge where she has been vacationing. She discovers that everyone (or almost everyone) has been destroyed by an unknown catastrophe, and she must learn to survive on her own.
