(From the publisher):
When Merlyn returns to Camulod with Arthur, they have little time to celebrate their homecoming. A threat is posed to Britain in the form of Peter Ironhair, and Merlyn and Arthur soon find themselves riding into battle to protect their dream of a united Britain against Ironhair's dangerous ambitions. In the battle that ensues, Arthur proves himself a valiant soldier, but Merlyn fears that he is yet to be a leader of men. He sends Arthur to live for a time among his father's people, the Pendragon, to learn their culture and beliefs in a way that may teach Arthur to rule them.
While Arthur is away, a sequence of events occurs that challenges everything Merlyn holds dear. He comes to rely on perhaps the only force that can defeat Ironhair and his allies - and undergoes a powerful metamorphosis, becoming The Sorcerer.
Upon Arthur's return, Merlyn can see that the time has come to present Arthur to the people of Britain as the Riothamus - High King of a new, united Britain. In the presence of thousands of new subjects, along with a new order of knights gathered for his support, Arthur is crowned. Swearing himself the defend the Christian faith against invaders, Arthur calls for a sign from heaven - and miraculously withdraws the Sword of Kingship from the stone.
The Sorcerer has fulfilled his promise. The King is crowned, Britain is united - and the face of history and legend is forever changed.
