The story chronicles the adventures of one A. Clarence Shandon (nicknamed 'Silverlock' for a streak of gray in his otherwise black hair) after he is shipwrecked and finds himself cast upon the shore of The Commonwealth of Letters.
There he meets a panoply of characters from history and works of fiction--a veritable Who's Who that will have the reader excitedly researching the references to learn more. Not all the persons met are found in their normal guises, but that's the great fun of this epic tale.
All of the characters, including Shandon himself, are given life so that one must either like or loathe them, but it's hard to remain impartial to any of them.
