Having at last, in middle-age, won independence from her family, Janey has realised a lifelong dream of a villa on the Mediterranean. Her dream becomes a nightmare with the unexpected arrival of her delinquent young nephew, Michael, who blackmails her by claiming to have proof of certain discreditable episodes in her past life that she has done her best to hide even from herself. An explosive situation develops, only to be resolved by the death of one of them. But by this time the villa, in its idyllic setting, has become a place haunted by guilt and fear.
