This is a tall tale, told in the cowboy vernacular, about an extraordinary rooster named Dick, who although he was the runt of his mother's brood, proved his fighting courage early. He and his brothers and sister were put on the chuck wagon of a trail driving caravan which was taking a herd of Longhorn cattle from Oakville, Texas to Dodge City, Kansas. The intention of Sam Goodall, the colored cook, was to prepare these chickens for frying, and so give the cowmen one extra meal.
