A Cry of Stone is the life of a native Canadian artist, Rose Wâbos. Abandoned as an infant, physically handicapped, Rose is raised by her grandmother, an Indian woman named Oldmary, in the northern Ontario wilderness. The story covers a period from 1940 to 1973, chronicling Rose's growth to womanhood, her moving out into the world of cities and culture, her discovery of her spiritual vocation-a radical calling to poverty of spirit.
