Summary :

Though a fully separate and individual work, the Reprieve is the second in Sartre's famous trilogy, Roads to Freedom. The action of the novel occurs during the brief period when Europe, no longer able to ignore or minimize the Hitler threat, realized in terror and confusion that attack was imminent. Sartre's technique of passing from the general to the individual, of changing place or character without warning, brilliantly reflects the feverish tangle of those historic moments. His dramatic power and originality combine to produce one of the key literary achievements of today.
