For Rod Gallowglass, the Lord High Warlock of Gramarye, and his witch-wife, Gwendolyn, the weddings of three of their children—especially Cordelia's marriage to Crown Prince Alain—is a time for great celebration. But, then, Gwen falls ill and dies, leaving behind a husband dangerously unhinged by grief—and a land without a Protector.

As Rod wanders the forest in search of Gwen's spirit, his Heirs—particularly the Rogue Wizard Magnus—must defend Gramarye against the forces of evil that are gathering to take advantage of the High Warlock‘s absence.
