Dheribi's mother had sacrificed her freedom and the love of her true mate to bring him up as the illegitimate son of a king of the Badakhar, the conquering tribe who had enslaved her people, the Cantareans. His mission, as envisioned by the old ones of the Open Dream, was to strengthen the greenmagic of the followers of the goddess Callia, to make them forever invulnerable to the brutal Badakh magics, the magics that weakened those who used them, but which had nonetheless scattered the Cantareans from their ancestral lands.
Knowing nothing of his planned destiny, Dheribi had angered his foster father by dueling with the son of an influential noble...and at the same time had brought his magical talent to the attention of the king's most powerful wizard. He could be a great magical asset to the kingdom...if he survived the scourging and exile necessary to appease the nobles.
But the goddess Callia had plans of her own...
