Summary :

This novel plunges the reader into the dangerous life of the mercenary bands that ranged through the strike-torn Congo of the early nineteen-sixties. Bruce Curry, in despair after the bitter break-up of his marriage and family, captains an ill-disciplined unit with the dubious support of three white officers: Mike, an ex-surgeon and secret alcoholic, Andre, sad and gentle outcast of an intolerant Belgian society, and the foul-mouthed Wally, whose uncontrollable jealousies and violent ways transform him at last into an enemy far more deadly to Bruce than the hostile tribes and bandits that infest the land.

Bruce's mission is to relieve a mining community cut off by the fighting and retrieve the valuable consignment of diamonds they still hold. In grim suspense, the mercenary band traverses hostile territory only to face terror as they confront a ruthless group of bandits in the town they are sent to relieve.

Escaping with a lovely Belgian girl, the diamonds and a handful of civilians, their journey back through dense jungle is made in the teeth of poisoned-arrow attacks and sabotage, and climaxes with a tense single-handed battle to the death between Bruce and Wally the man who has sworn to destroy him.

The Dark of the Sun is a vivid insight into the psychology of the mercenary soldier and a spine-chilling story of action and suspense. It was filmed as The Mercenaries.
