Once the Angels of the 24 Stations ruled the Middle Worlds harmoniously between them. But since the fall of Set at the hands (?) of the Nameless, only the Houses of Life and Death, ruled by the usurpers Osiris and Anubis, hold the worlds of mankind in precarious sway. Now Anubis has sent an emissary, Wakim (whose name is not his own) and chicken-headed Osiris has sent his only son, the guileless warrior Horus, for there are stirrings and portents in the Middle Worlds; the banjo of that deathless freedom fighter, the Steel General, is rumored along the spaceways; the dog worries the sacred shoes on the altar, while the Thing That Cannot Die cries in the night.
