Stephen Byerley – the politician from the story “Evidence”, now World Co-Ordinator – is disturbed by signs of instability in the global economy, and the increasing dependence on Machines to control much of it. He interviews the leaders of various regions of the world and finally robopsychologist Susan Calvin and is presented with the startling conclusion: that it’s too late, the Machines are in charge of humanity’s future.
