When Anatole takes the train to visit his Uncle Terrible ("because he's so terribly nice," he explains to his seatmate) they meet the mysterious urban wizard Arcimboldo the Marvelous in a café. In the aftermath of Anatole's battle with the Martian mosquitoes, Uncle Terrible is turned into a snake, and to change him back (and to save the world) Anatole must risk a terrifying fate to win back the thread of death from Arcimboldo and rejoin it with the thread of life.
