Summary :

The year is 2008. It begins with a Malamute, dressed in an antique jacket and wearing spectacles. He is followed by others--German Shepherds, Dobermans and Great Danes all dressed in grand old Prussian style. Outfitted with voice boxes and prosthetic arms, the dogs are the result of an experiment begun years ago in the tiny Canadian village of Rankstadt. Though they lead a life of glamour and wealth, there is a strange incurable illness that threatens them with extinction.

  • "One of the most unique and unusual works of fiction in many Frankenstein before it, this is a fabulous fable well-told." USA Today
  • "The author makes an astonishing and elegiac case for the dogs' assertion that it's a terrible thing to be a dog and know it." New Yorker
  • "On one level it might be compared to The Island of Dr. Moreau and the dangers of what happens when a mad scientist begins messing about, trying to 'improve' upon nature. But this novel is too good to be a mere catalogue of ideas. The characters are too wonderful...perfectly drawn....A unique novel I admired greatly." Washington Post
  • "At its core, Lives Of The Monster Dogs is about love and death and loss-themes so strong that they transcend even the boundaries of species....Never violating its internal logic, the book unfolds like a rich, resonant dream that you can't stop thinking about the following day." New York Times Book Review
