Joan Kirby wants Mason to investigate her husband, who she thinks told her a tall story about helping a stranded woman in the middle of the night and dropping her off at a hotel. When Mason investigates, he finds that John Kirby's stint as a Samaritan has implicated him in the murder of a doctor who ran a clinic dealing in stolen narcotics and illegal adoptions.
