Nell Pargeter, who has secrets and a shady past, arranges to stay with Frankie Ashton while on sabbatical in Auckland, NZ. Frankie writes to Nell suggesting they meet up first in Sydney but Frankie doesn't show and Nell, although a little disturbed by the tone of Frankie's letter, is not unduly worried. She expects to find Frankie in Auckland except Frankie isn't there although Francesca is. There is something odd about Francesca. Nell isn't sure that Francesca tells the truth. Odd things begin to happen: menacing and mostly silent telephone calls; a malevolent presence who watches and waits? And the witch, Megg Moon. Is she friend or foe? Then Nell meets Jez Darcy, a policeman with secrets of his own. Nell hopes that Jez is an ally who will help her find Frankie but Francesca tells her that Frankie had problems with him. When Nell discovers that Frankie didn't go to Sydney, she finds herself drawn into a nightmarish game where everyone seems to have secrets and tell lies and she is forced to confront death, treachery and her own fear of madness.
