A man dreams that he is flying, and when he wakes up finds himself floating above his bed. From then on it is all he can do to not levitate, and this uncanny ability of his puts him in a number of awkward situations. His wife thinks he is crazy…he loses his job…and worst of all, as a physics professor, he is desperate to find an explanation for this phenomenon, but none of his colleagues will take him seriously - until he finds a way to make them listen.
This story was originally published in the October 1953 issue of Astounding Science Fiction and has been reprinted in a number of anthologies and collections.
John Campbell, who requested the story from Asimov, required certain changes before he would publish it. Although the story, printed in accordance with these changes, ends happily, it initially had quite a different outcome. This story is printed with the original ending restored in The Alternate Asimovs
