Summary :

Allison Atwood is lost in Alaska. A plane crash has left the pilot dead and fourteen-year-old Allison stranded above the Arctic Circle in a wilderness of ice and snow. To the eyes of a girl from southern California, the land looks like another planet - a frightening, frozen planet without a living soul. But help arrives in the form of an Inupiat trapper who brings her to his village. From there Allison begins the long journey to find her mother, who waits hundreds of miles away in a village by the sea.

The journey brings Allison in touch with people who change the way she views the world - people such as Matu, the boy of thirteen who seems wise beyond his years, and Aqsuk, the dangerous man who ultimately brings calamity to his village. But perhaps the most improtant to Allison is Oolik, the physically challenged young woman who can neither speak nor hear. But in the end, it is Oolik who raises her "voice" to tell the truth.
