(From the publisher):
Edward and Rosanna buy an antique door for their apartment, having no idea that they have purchased their passageway to another world. But when they step through the doorway, they find themselves in a place at right angles to real time, where the conventional greeting is 'have you loved well?'; where the army is a vehicle for play therapy and the real weapons are powered mandalas; where the most precious treasure is a crystal the size of a grain of sand, which contains the secret of existence; and where they are 'Adepts' with an important role to play. They have arrived in the country of Los. He is a colonal in the Losian army, and she, a slave girl, in a place where people are only owned if they choose to be.
Many characters play a role in their adventures: Sutun, the twisted ruler of the kingdom of Verula, who feasts on human flesh and is possessed by the demon of self-power; Agrippa, the solitary monk who wanders in the desert, filled with memories of the women he loved; the Klars, a gentle tribe of enlightened apes; Chorim, the spiritual charlatan who is using slick deception to seize power in the City of Adepts; Thapsis, the wise Arch-Adept who serves as Edward and Rosanna's guide and appears whenever they have fulfilled one goal to set another, ywt more Herculanean task for them; and most notable of all, the Tetrarch, a "horse" of prehistoric origins equipped with razor-sharp teeth and menacing claws, who is deadly to his enemies but intensely loyal to his masters and more than once saves them from death or capture.
Edward and Rosanna enter a realm where fantasy is alive and real, and they discover that living out their fantasies is not the dream they imagined—but a journey of understanding filled with challenge and danger. They discover that the Tetrarch holds the key to their search, and in the end, it is he who leads them on their final journey and returns them to the apartment where it all began.
