Summary :

It is the year 999 and Ben Attar, a Jewish merchant from Tangiers, along with his two wives and Muslim business partner, undertakes his annual voyage to Europe. Through this trip, Attar hopes to advance his trading interests in Paris and other cities abroad as well as preserve his business partnerships, now made uncertain due to his bigamous marriage. The journey is the beginning of a human drama filled with the moral conflicts of fidelity and desire - as well as issues of faith and religious code and how it emanates from the flesh as much as from the heart and mind.

Blurbs:
  • "Extraordinary...Yehoshua is so graceful and eloquent that his work's timeliness also succeeds, paradoxically, in making it timeless." New York Times Book Review
  • "A vision of a multicultural utopia...Yehoshua's parable forces us to confront issues at the end of our current millennium." Los Angeles Times
  • "Yehoshua tells a complex, densely layered story of love, sexuality, and betrayal in a richly allusive, langourous prose. De Lange's translation is sensitively nuanced and elegant, catching the strangely hypnotic rhythm of Yehoshua's style...the effect is miving, subtle, at one cerebral and emotional. One of Yehoshua's most fully realized works, a masterpiece." Kirkus Reviews
