Summary (From the publisher):

Alfonso Tiberón de Mendoza, inspector of roads in a Spanish province, retires each August to an empty schoolroom, wedges his aging, portly body into a child's desk, and indulges in the only luxury of his life: he writes. Choosing this summer to tell a fairy tale, he imagines a vast Netherlands extending southward from Amsterdam to the highest peaks of Europe, and in it he places a perfectly happy and beautiful couple, Kai and Lucia. Circus performers at home in the world of illusion, the pair fall on hard times in the north and are forced to look for work in the perilous wilderness of the south. Shortly after they arrive, Kai is kidnapped by the henchmen of the evil Snow Queen, and Lucia, aided by an old clown, sets out to find him. Since Tiburon's story is a fairy tale, she succeeds and the couple are reunited.
