Summary :

It is the '70s. In an old bakery converted into a home, two single parent families have come together under one roof. For nine-year-old Tess it is a new start and she sees in William - the tall, blond, guitar-playing father of three - both the father she craves and a lover for her mother, Francine. Her brother Jake, however feels nothing for William but contempt.

When Francine becomes involved with William, Tess - eager to share in their love - tries to please the adults as well as win Jake round. But Tess soon finds that good intentions don't always bring happiness and that adults are sometimes capable of making mistakes...

  • "A beautiful book, savage and tender by turns. Nobody else can write this well about the bravery and the sad wisdom of children. In a culture which dins with brashness and self-advertisement, attending to Esther Freud's still, truthfull voice becomes not only a pleasure but a necessity" Jonathan Coe
  • "It's wonderful. Freud has a precious and remarkable gift for creating fictional children. She is infinitely patient with the subtle differences between the worlds of children and adults, and her descriptions of the collisions between them are hauntingly beautiful...Tell every parent (and step-parent) you know to read The Wild" The Times
  • "Brilliantly drawn characters...They dance on the page, displaying their flaws, sometimes with desperation, but never without hope" Independent
  • "Ranks alongside Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha as one of the very few great contemporary novels about childhood" William Sutcliffe, Independent on Sunday
