Summary (From the publisher):

The evolution of Margaret Atwood's poetry illuminates one of our major literary talents. Here, as in her novels, is intensity combined with sardonic detachment, and in her early poems her genius for a level stare at the ordinary is already apparent. As startling is her ability to contrast the everyday with the terrifying: "Each time I hit a key/ on my electric typewriter/ speaking of peaceful trees/ another village explodes." In other poems, Margaret Atwood ruminates on history, or evokes the distance between her world and others. And she dramatises the sexual struggle with anguish and tenderness: "I approach this love/ like a biologist/ putting on my rubber/ gloves and white labcoat/ You flee from it/ like an escaped political/ prisoner, and no wonder."

These poems, published in this country for the first time, represent Margaret Atwood's most powerful work in any form.
