:
This, the great mystic work of Georg Phillip Friedrich von Hardenberg, the early German romantic poet known as 'Novalis', was written between 1797 and 1800. No English translation of it has appeared for many years. In his conclusion Gascoyne writes: "The Hymns are an expression of spontaneous faith without parallel in the contemporary world".
