Summary (IBList user synopsis):

Gish is proud to be a troop, fighting the alien Sload. Using surrogate war machines operated remotely by direct neural interface, they inflict damage on the invaders. But outside combat, use of surrogate bodies is a sign of decadence and subject of ridicule and jokes. Gish is young, so young he looks like a rich man's surrogate instead of an authentic human. Proving his authenticity--and teasing through the felicities and customs of surrogate culture--is an obsession for him, especially when he learns that his friend and mentor, old Tarby, is retiring from the military. In a society where real and fake are difficult to distinguish, Gish must come to terms with his own sense of self and the possibility of change.
