"Black Heart and White Heart" has a historical steeing - it is set in Zulu territory in 1878, just prior to the Zulu massacre of British troops at Isandhlwana in January of the following year. It was first published in the African Review in January 1896 and included in Black Heart and White Heart and Other Stories (1900).
