When Harriet Sutton came to Boston, she decided to buy an old apartment house on Beacon Hill, living in one apartment and renting the rest. On the day after Christmas, she gave a housewarming for tenants: just before they arrived, the wind blew a piece of paper through a open window, a note bearing a command in capital letters: BURN THIS. It seemed to be about a conspiracy to murder someone called Nemesis. Soon afterward, her friend and lawyer Jabez Coppard was murdered in Harriet's house: the police saw her combat-traumatized son Tommy as the likely suspect. In desperation, Harriet consulted Dr. Basil Willing, the forensic psychiatrist working with the Boston police. But before he could unravel the tangle, he had to uncover long-hidden secrets in the private lives of the innocent as well as the guilty.
