Christine Drummond heads for Paris to make a new life for herself. She takes a position with a nasty old dowager as a companion-secretary, but quickly becomes overwhelmed and stifled by riches and luxury. Attempting to extract herself from her situation, she is reeled back in again and again by the old woman's plays for sympathy, and by her own sense of responsibility.
