During his lecture tours in the 1890s, Mark Twain contrived the last two adventures of Tom, with Huck and Jim, became the first aeronaut, or rather, “erronort,” to cross the Atlantic. His futile efforts to explain the international date line, the flying bronze horses, the Pyramids, and the devastating common-sense replies of Huck and Jim were published serially and then in book form as Tom Sawyer Abroad.
