Summary (IBList user synopsis):

Manue Nanti has joined the Mars Project, a multi-generational undertaking aimed at taming the hostile Red Planet. Drawn by the money, he looks around him disgustedly at the old timers. Sunken chests, empty eyes, discouraged shuffling, he knows that he will not become like these men. He alone will rise above, work hard, and return to earth triumphant and rich. But Manue is in for a rude shock. The Red Planet does not deal lightly with the men who brave her iron choked surface, her freezing temperatures, her ultra-thin atmosphere. What he doesn't yet realize is that he has become a small piece in a great machine whose workings stretch beyond his simple life, and which will alter the destiny of all mankind.
