Amabelle Desir is an orphaned Haitian woman living and serving on the estate of a wealthy Dominican family in the 1930's. When the ruthless Dominican president Rafael Trujillo decided that Haitian immigrants, servants and farm workers living in the DR pose a threat to his country's "purity" he enacts a policy of genocide to rid his land of these unwanted people. Amdelle must decide quickly if she should make for the border with her lover or trust that her employers will keep her safe.
