Emma Lou Brown's dark complexion brings grief to her family of fair skinned African Americans and causes her much shame and humiliation in the small Northwest town she calls home. As soon as she is able she moves to Harlem hoping to find peace in the 1920's black mecca. Instead she finds more of the same color obession that she thought she'd left behind and has to learn how to live, love and be comfortable in her own dark skin.
