Nicholas Urfe is 25 and bored with life in England. He decides to take a position as the English teacher at a boarding school on the small island of Phraxos, Greece. The island is beautiful but Nicholas dislikes his teaching assignment. On one of his hikes he discovers the secluded summer house of millionaire Maurice Conchis. As Nicholas investigates further, it seems he is expected at the house. Conchis is a strange man and Nicholas is fascinated by his stories of his youth. One night at the house, Nicholas meets "Lily", a woman from one of Conchis' stories. He is soon drawn into a labyrinth of mysterious events, a psychological game, where it is hard to know what is illusion and what is for real.
