In the remote forests and valleys of New Zealand's high alps, the timeless and balanced world of the unique mountain parrot, kea, is suddenly disrupted by the appearance of mysterious birds with no wings. Hardship and corruption afflict Strongbeak's home of Kawee and he is forced to flee from the evil kea boss, Highfeather. Strongbeak leads his friends in a quest for a new world beyond the mountains; after both farce and tragedy they find, ultimately, a land of freedom.
