This short story, often considered to be partially autobiographical, explores the rather bleak relationship between a hard-working Australian man and his family on an unfestive New Year's Eve night.
The story was begun in England as Lawson's first novel, but was broken off and eventually completed after his return to Australia.
First published in the Bulletin on 13 December 1902, under the title 'A Child in the Dark: A Bush Sketch.'.
